Wheel…Software to Objects

A while ago I mentioned that I had been working with 3D Printing. Because I have decided not to go ahead with the idea I thought I would show off my work.
In the upper half of the picture is the design in Solidworks. I emailed that file off to an outfit in Petone and they sent back the objects in the lower half of the picture (yes the things stacked on the drug boxes). The print outs are an exact replica of the design produced in Solidworks. This version of the print out is done in a resin coated plaster, but you can now get the objects printed in plastic.
As you can see below the printing resolves detail quite well… the hub on the right has 1 mm features.

Listening to: Carlos (Don’t Let It Go To Your Head) - Pete Yorn
Found this over at The
Washington Note. Not the most flattering commentary of Mr Wolfowitz:
The nomination of Paul Wolfowitz to be president of the World Bank, following
his commission of a long and costly series of blunders as deputy secretary of defense
in George W. Bush’s first term, comes as no surprise to those familiar with his career.
Wolfowitz is the Mr. Magoo of American foreign policy. Like the myopic cartoon character,
Wolfowitz stumbles onward blindly and serenely, leaving wreckage and confusion behind.
This is the Salon
article that this quote is from.

Listening to: Call To Love - Crooked Fingers
As a kid I dreamt of living in a house under the sea (I know! How surprising!).
Knowing that reaching this goal would take quite an effort I did a lot of research
(I also convinced my parents to pony up for dive lessons… but that’s another story,
one involving a woman’s wet suit). One of my primary sources of data was Cousteau and
his adventures. I devoured his writing like I did ice cream. So you can imagine the
delight I got from Wes Andersons The
Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.
The Life Aqautic is the story of Steve Zissou and his desire to track down the
Jaguar Shark that killed his side kick. I have read a lot of reviews that suggest
that the movie was little more than a re-imaging of The
Royal Tenenbaums. But I don’t agree, well not completely. Sure you’ve got the
rather worn out and not particularly likable paternal figure and the dysfunctional
family, but The Life Aquatic goes in a different direction… The Life Aquatic seems
to be more of a homage to old school exploration than a treatise on families (though
it does deal with this theme a lot). The Life Aquatic is a lot more fun, though less
darkly humorous, than Tenenbaums and Bill Murray is the obvious contributor to this.
For me the real highlights (other than Andersons delicious melancholy and delightful
left-of-centre rendition of reality) were the creatures (my personal fav was
the Crayon Pony Fish) and the annoying-until-you-can-work-it-out but very, very, trippy
rendition of David Bowie songs in Portuguese.
Not as good as the Tenebaums… but great fun none-the-less.
And hey… I’ve started tracking down the Cousteau books again
UPDATE: Thanks to the Great Crap Net in the Sky aka eBay I am now the owner of four Cousteau books circa
1974.

one of the key concepts of good game play… it should be as easy as possible for
people to play games together. I have paid the big toll (buying the DS) and suddenly
it is a lot more valuable to me because I can freely share stuff with other DS owners…cool!

Listening to: Pet - Porno for Pyros
I am fan of John Campbell… he is who he is and he doesn’t take himself terribly
seriously:
“I’ve got two reputations. One is for being so positive, I’m like a Mary Poppins
character - and the other is for being a rude, ambushing, unethical creep . . . I’m
just selective about when I use it.”
So he starts his
7pm show tomorrow and I can say good riddance to The Simpsons (I like The Simpsons
as much as the next script-quoting-dweeb, but I’ve OD’d on them to tell you the truth)
and hopefully ‘hello’ to some entertaining TV.

I have signed up to the Amazon Associates programme….
hence the appearance of the Pimpin’ panel on the right. Given that I am a bit of an Amazon junkie
I figured any possible discount is worth a crack. Depending on how enthused I feel
I might start doing reviews and linking to the relevant Amazon product - but we’ll
see.
