Apple to Ditch IBM, Switch to Intel Chips

Listening to: BBC Radio 1

WOW! It’s either a very slow news day at News.Com… or it’s the real deal.

I really didn’t think this would happen (and until I see the announcement on Monday
I am still dubious that the full story is out)… primarily because of the effort
Apple has gone to to differentiate itself and the role that the Power PC has played
in this (industrial design has played a far larger role… but not following the CPU
road most travelled as also played a huge role (Altivec for instance)… still, the
vast majority of the target Apple customers don’t give a damn about the silicon that
sits underneath their mouse pointer).

The announcement is expected Monday at Apple’s Worldwide Developer
Conference in San Francisco, at which Chief Executive Steve Jobs is giving the keynote
speech. The conference would be an appropriate venue: Changing the chips would require
programmers to rewrite their software to take full advantage of the new processor.
