Over the past few days programmers at both Adobe and MS have
posted about moving their code bases across to the Intel. The guts of it: ‘Just Recompile”
is a teeny part of the puzzle. Well worth a read.

Just an warning… based on the last week I have sneaky suspicion that updates to
the blog will be spotty over the next few weeks. Something else is consuming a lot
of my bandwidth at present.

Listening to: Inside - Toad The Wet Sprocket

From Arstechnica this week:

  • Google tries auctioning
print ads, burns up on reentry

To be generous, the results were disappointing—at least from Google’s perspective.
To begin with, the auction ended up being extended past its original end date, apparently
due to lack of interest on the part of bidders. When it was finally over, some of
the auction winners had gotten great deals: CoffeeCup Software ended up with three
half-page ads in MSL for a price of about US$4,000 each. The regular rate for such
an ad is a much pricier US$59,000.

  • Iwata reveals a
    few Revolution tidbits at GDC

Overall, the keynote speech was similar to Iwata’s 2005 talk, in that it challenged
developers to “think outside the box” and create new types of games that appeal to
a broader spectrum of people. Clearly, Nintendo feels that it is providing the best
tools to third-party developers to accomplish this. Will it translate into sales and
software support for the Revolution? That is up to the public to decide
    (also
worth checking out is the Zelda
    DS video
    ).

The iPod Juggernaut

Listening to: Something’s Always Wrong - Toad The Wet Sprocket

Daring Fireball has an interesting
essay
on the iPod and exactly why 2004 was not like 1984:

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Macintosh two years ago,
Newsweek’s Steven Levy interviewed Steve Jobs. The subject eventually turned
to the Mac’s relatively meager market share:

If that’s so,
then why is the Mac market share, even after Apple’s recent revival, sputtering
at a measly 5 percent? Jobs has a theory about that, too. Once a company devises a
great product, he says, it has a monopoly in that realm, and concentrates less on
innovation than protecting its turf. “The Mac-user interface was a 10-year monopoly,”
says Jobs. “Who ended up running the company? Sales guys. At the critical juncture
in the late ’80s, when they should have gone for market share, they went for
profits. They made obscene profits for several years. And their products became mediocre.
And then their monopoly ended with Windows 95. They behaved like a monopoly, and it
came back to bite them, which always happens.”

But second, look at that quote in the context of Apple’s iPod strategy. “At
the critical juncture […] when they should have gone for market share, they
went for profits.” Of all the myriad ways that Apple’s iPod position today
differs from their Macintosh position 20 years ago, perhaps none is greater than this:
With the iPod, Apple is going for market share.
