Will the Space Industry be Like the Segway?

Listening to: Running - Evermore

Doogie Howser forwarded me this insightful article by Jeff Foust. Foust toys with the idea of the space industry being a solution looking for a problem:

The Segway and the space industry, in essence, share a common conundrum: they offer advanced technical solutions that fail to solve the problems of most of its potential customers, and their high prices suppress the casual experimentation that might stimulate the development of new markets.

I found this link over at Tommi’s
S60 applications blog
. Given the barcode
generator is free
… it does open up a world of opportunity. Imagine graffiti
with 2D barcodes embedded in it, linking the art to some sort of online compnent…
a whole new world of urban art.

Diamagnetic Levitation

June 6th, 2006 by davidtenhave

Listening to: Touch, Feel, & Lose - Ryan Adams

Grand Illusions have a great
example of diamagnetic levitation
using neodymium magnets and pyrolytic graphite.
The video kicks
off all those ‘woah cool’ reactions I had doing science at school.

…if we only use a single magnet and try and suspend our diamagnetic
material in mid air, we will fail, and it will simply slide off the magnet. The arrangement
we have here uses four 12mm neodymium magnets, with alternate north and south poles
pointing upwards. In effect the pyrolytic graphite becomes trapped between the four
poles, and so floats above our magnets indefinitely!

GNU Radio is all over the place today.

It’s a big deal… one device that can suck data out of the sky and allow it’s user
to remix it… we’re talking a whole new world of mix-up. This is going to ve very
fun to watch.
