US Generals Urge Climate Action

Listening to: Harbour Town - Icehouse

I found this little eye-opener on BBC World:

Former US military leaders have called on the Bush administration to make major cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

In a report, they say global warming poses a serious threat to national security, as the US could be drawn into wars over water and other conflicts.

They appear to criticise President George W Bush’s refusal to join an international treaty to cut emissions.

    Hi Dave,

The Pentagon comissioned a report back in 2003 (Randall and Schwartz) on this issue and the report noted there could be a significant drop in the human carrying capacity of the Earth’s environment. Whilst it was significant that the Pentagon was looking at this in terms of national security, the report fell on deaf ears at the White House.

Clearly resource issues are of concern to the military.

    Peace

    Raf

    Thanks Raf.

What we’re seeing, I think, is where the true strategic thought lies in the current administration.
