If Trade Could Provide Me With One Thing…

I was asked this question today:

If NZTE could provide you with one thing, what would it be?

I want the network of DOC huts to expand to key cities around the world. The new generation of exporters travel the world with a backpack (packed 10 mins before leaving home) and a laptop. All we need is a place to:

  • sleep
  • wifi
  • store stuff

This would be as simple and as spartan as a DOC hut, I would even pay for the privilege of staying there (in fact, I should have to pay) and I’d even bring my own sleeping bag. Knowing that as soon as my feet touched the ground in the US I had somewhere to stay is the most invaluable thing I can have.

I can’t afford to burn precious cash on hotels and I don’t need fancy-shmansy meeting rooms (all my meetings overseas have occurred in other people’s offices or in cafes) - I need a secure place to sleep, hook a laptop up, watch the rugby with other kiwis and run my company. It doesn’t have to be about comfort or razza-ma-tazz it only has to be about security, certainty and efficiency. Note that this is NOT a fully serviced office - it is exactly the business equivalent of a DOC hut, hell make it out of a stack of shipping containers if you need to! Bonus tracks if it’s stocked with Macs Gold and Vegemite.

I just want to repeat a call John has made. Ponoko is looking for a HTML/CSS rockstar. It’s a great chance to:

  • Allow people to make amazing things
  • Work for one of New Zealand’s most exciting companies - one that has an intrinsically global outlook
  • Be part of a very very experienced software development team
  • Work on ideas that are world changing

If this floats your boat, please email me (david@ponoko.com).

Listening to: What We Need ( DLT and Ruane’s What You Get remix ) - The Black Seeds

TechCrunch meant that we needed to restrict access to our site for a little while. I am very proud to announce that Ponoko is now open the whole world! The guys have taken a lot of the feedback from the last three weeks and made bunch of improvements. They’ve also included instructions for getting Illustrator CS to spit out EPS files in a way that we can use (thanks to Sue for her help).

Printed shoe

This was a proof of concept presented at MCPC 2007. The entire shoe was printed in a 3D printer. The coating was applied later. This is a project by TNO.
