Listening to: King Of Pain - The Police
The very first language I ever used for web apps was Perl (I use the word “used” in the same way a 3 year old uses the phrase “i do fine art”). I haven’t touched it for 10 years and I am now back up to my eye balls with it. My brain hurts. I have really rapidly reached that “f**kit I’m going to do this in [current language of high proficiency]” stage … where you know the effort will pay off and the ACTUAL value of going back is not as high as you want it to be.
I am hoping to cure my hatred of RegEx at the end of this exercise…

Listening to: Black Friday - Concord Dawn
Gizmodo has a bunch of WKII photos. I saw the WIRED gallery yesterday… my first thought was that it wasn’t the prettiest airplane that Burt Rutan has created :-(. It’s horribly superficial, I know, and it makes me a bad fan boi - but the aesthetics of Burt’s design work has always been one of the big reasons that I love his work. I’m sure it flies like a dream.

Listening to: Transcendental Object At The End Of Time - Epsilon Blue
I have often spent time wondering about the weird disconnected feeling I have now that I have passed the year 2000… and how that imaginary barrier hasn’t been pushed out to another date. Danny Hillis sums it up well:
It was very surprising to me, getting to the future, that nobody was all that interested. Things just started to happen so fast, we were overwhelmed. With the microchip, we stopped being able to imagine the future — we had so much trouble handling what was being brought out in the present.

From BBC World:
Security expert Bruce Schneier said: “As bad as the damage is from publishing - and there probably will be some - the damage is much, much worse by not disclosing.”

Listening to: Strawberry Swing - Coldplay
When I started Ponoko there were a list of specific people I wanted to end up using Ponoko. Stephen Templer was one of those people. I really love his art work. On Friday his latest automata was installed at Deluxe Cafe… some of the pieces were made using Ponoko. Stoked!
The second goal was that Ponoko was to be something that parents and children could use to learn… Whispering Inferno posted a small review - the key lines being:
We got out the beads tonight, some leather twine and hey presto, personalised jewellery. Can’t wait to try out some more complex stuff now we’ve mastered the basics. One more thing that technology lets me and my daughters learn together; nothing beats turning a paper design into a real world item!
