I have often spent time wondering about the weird disconnected feeling I have now that I have passed the year 2000… and how that imaginary barrier hasn’t been pushed out to another date. Danny Hillis sums it up well:

It was very surprising to me, getting to the future, that nobody was all that interested. Things just started to happen so fast, we were overwhelmed. With the microchip, we stopped being able to imagine the future — we had so much trouble handling what was being brought out in the present.

I had an afternoon to kill yesterday so I checked out ‘Iron Man’. Robert Downey Jr was a genius pick for the role of Tony Stark. The movie is great fun and I figure that as geek (anti-)heros go Tony Stark is pretty good. I left with a silly grin on my face.

I then killed the rest of the afternoon by looping around the Bay using nothing but public transport (I needed to use 3 networks… but it’s doable).

Every 12 months or so I find a game that is so compelling I just NEED to play it… I have found just such a game. Chronotron. Simply awesome! Robots, time-travel, non-linear, brain exploding goodness.

… unless cheese comes with EVERYTHING! Less than 24 hours into my 3rd US trip and I am cheesed out. I need to be a bit more selective about my dining choices I think.

Last week was a wonderful week at Ponoko… a real taste of the creativity we’ve tried to unleash. Our users put the following things on show:

• A robot
• Cufflinks
• Christmas decorations
• A set of shelves
• A lamp shade
• A logic puzzle

I can only imagine that this was what it was like working for an early computing company… that visceral thrill of seeing what people ended up doing with the tool that you gave them.
